"I will not lead you down the garden path"

Roger Bennett’s dispatches from what must be or seem like the brink of the abyss are some of the most difficult reading I encounter these days. Back at the convention, I sensed and commented in passing on how heavily tinged his remarks were with the stark mortality of his situation, and MNP and I both felt Roger was clearly coming to terms with certain realities about his condition in ways that had not seemed so necessary - until now. His candid valor in all this is astounding and heroic. It makes me think of Roethke: “I wake to sleep and take my waking slow / I learn by going where I have to go.”

Update: I should have included a link to Bennett’s personal blog, Midnight Meditations: an online journal through leukemia. Here it is.
