A good book

Via reader DC, let me draw your attention to a new book of scholarly essays on southern gospel: More than Precious Memories. I’ve only quickly skimmed it, so I’ll have to say more later, but it’s clear it’s not for the reader who’s looking for straightahead history or music appreciation. That said, it’s the first sustained academic treatment of the subject from a rhetorical/theoretical perspective that I’ve found (outside of my own work and the passing observations of a few country music historians and critics). Hat tip, DC.

It definitely has a scholarly price.

Given the names of the schools the authors work for, I would worry about some obvious christian bias. This might be an unfair assessment but it is worth investigating.
