Comment on the Pitchyness: I wasn't at NQC, but I also listened to it on the radio... several groups were VERY pitchy and the harmony wandered quite a bit. At first, I figured it was just because it was a radio brodcast. But it was only certain groups that sounded offish. Won't mention any names, but I wasn't the only one in the room who noticed it. Hopefully we can just blame it on the sound system...

Hmmm . . . I'm an overweight, out-of-shape non-athlete who never had a prayer in little league basketball. But I'll be danged if my eyesight isn't good enough to notice, "Hey, that tall guy just shot the ball from behind the 3-point line--and he missed the shot!" I am perplexed as to how my slovenly athletic prowess should prevent me from accurately noticing that someone missed a basketball shot. Somehow, I'll bet Avery's hearing is quite sharp, regardless of whether or not he has ever been a professional singer.

If I remember correctly, I seem to recall Avery saying something a long time ago to the effect that he had been the pianist for a group that had once played NQC. Avery (or anybody who knows), if I'm remembering all that correctly, what group did you play with?

I've about decided Douglas' change of format was not a wise decision. Quasi-profanity? Where? Music credentials? Born again believer? If I'm not mistaken, this site was created to get into the quality of the music that we all love. To point fingers and question someone's beliefs is a smokescreen. And not very Christian, I might add.

Hmmm... the longer I read your commentaries (i started about a year ago), the less impressed I am with you.

I am genuinely curious about a few things:

1. What are your music credentials? You imply that you have the ability to detect perfect pitch and to determine whether or not someone is "qualified" to sing a certain song, etc... Which groups have asked you to audition or desired to hire you? Surely there must be several that are rivaling for your remarkable talent.

2. Are you a born-again believer? Many of your recent comments show very little, if any, spiritual perception. I can understand and respect some of your comments with regard to the talent and industry end of SG, but you seem to be completely unable to relate to the ministry end. Very recently, I detect a sort of "mocking" of the spiritual aspect of the music which causes me to think that perhaps you do not personally know the One about whom these songs are sung.

3. Why the sudden change in your attitude toward Joseph Habedank of the Perrys. For quite some time, you sang his praises; but beginning with his car wreck, then bashing his song-writing ability on the Come Thirsty project, and now the major criticism of his move to lead... just curious, what happened there to cause you to do the Jekyll and Hyde thing?

Why would you take AVFL's word for it? Listen for yourself and decide.
After all, what group does Doug, a.k.a. "Avery" sing with and what are his credentials? Just curious...

NQC was kind of sad for me this year . You see I am a soldier and when I was in Iraq so many of the artist supported me through mailing me CDs and words of encouragement . Michael Booth took the time to get know me personally and that meant so much to me I will never forget that .What makes me sad about NQC is this was the last year for the Crabb Family . In Iraq I can remember when mortars would be lobbing in on Foward operating base and incoming fire would be hailing down on us and all of sudden the song "Through the fire" would just seem to be on CD player and it gave me hope that our Lord would always be with us Through the Fire in a literal since . Blame it on post traumatic stress disorder if you will but that somber guitar intro sat. night brought me right back there . I will sure miss the Crabbs !!!

Check out this picture I took during the Crabb Family's NQC Saturday evening performance: http://www.pianokevin.com/images/nqc/tn_DSC02076.JPG My intuition tells me this elderly couple was just being ornery -- there was nothing keeping them planted in their seats, really. I think they rather enjoyed causing a little scene. Just thought I'd share because part of me finds it entertaining. :-)

I've read a lot of comments about pitchiness in the daily reports. Is it possible the sound system (floor or in-ear monitors) and/or sound technicians were not up to snuff and groups were having a hard time hearing their vocals in the mix? Did you hear any scuttlebutt in that direction? It's hard to believe all those groups were pitchy, but maybe they were.

I wonder if the "soft" quasi-profanity occasionally used in this blog really adds to the message - or is it just a somewhat juvenile stab at being "with-it"?

>>I’ve wondered how the Perrys would do without Loren Harris. Again, not very well (and that really disappoints me).

Actually, they did a terrific job. Their group blend is better than it was before.

Yes, the Ehrlers line can be a bit dangerous...I almost got involved in a riot in 2001 over some cookies and cream...the 9/11 tensions? I think not...just really good ice cream...

I envy all who got to witness another NQC. Someday, when the kid is out of college and the wife and I retire I will attend. Just adding to the white hairs I guess.

What's great about this report, Douglas is that we get to hear through words what the music was like. For a long time I've ownder how the new Mercy's Mark would sound and apparently not very good. I've wondered how the Perrys would do without Loren Harris. Again, not very well (and that really disappoints me). My admiration for the Booth's was affirmed and my disdain for that particular flavor of ice cream shows that I'm really not old enough to really enjoy it. Thank Goodness.

Good to know that maybe Gold City is back and that Paid In Full (in an earlier post) is as good as I thought they were.

I thank you and most reading this will thank you.

I was not there to see it in person, but after hearing it on radio, I thought that the Dove Brothers' introduction of "Stand By Me" was a classy move.

Let's just accept as a fact that they had decided to do the song. McCray introduces it by referring to Signature Sound as "the hottest thing in Gospel music today." From anyone else, that would be a compliment; from McCray, it was really something, because at the time Ernie was forming Signature Sound, the Dove Brothers were "the hottest thing in Gospel music."

Now they're trying to reinvent themselves with new songs and progressive arrangements, and to me it seemed that he was acknowledging that the torch of "most exciting group" had been passed on--but he said it in a subtle, and classy, way.

Justin is good, but Nick Succi can play circles around him. The problem is that the Kingsmen doesn't feature his talent enough (and all anyone ever says is "look at that hair" and "oh, the Canadian" - comments that are both getting a bit old). If Nick was able to showcase his many different styles one evening, I think a lot of people would switch from SG lovers to, well, more well-rounded music lovers. Most SG listeners have no idea that there is a whole world of music out there; all they can see or hear is their little I-IV-V chords. Sad, really.

Another note: I just can't listen to the Perry's sing "Gawd Woks tha Daahrk Heeeeee-illllllsss"...tiresome.

My last point: Is anyone else completely tired of the Dove Brothers "Get Away Jordan" and "Didn't It Rain"???? ENOUGH ALREADY. I used to really enjoy McCray's voice, but that was when I could make out the lyrics he was singing. And try though I might, I can't make out most of the lyrics in either song. Please, please, please...something new (and easy to understand) would be nice. (Which really goes for all the groups - why would I want to hear the Hoppers do "Shoutin' Time" again? Or Talley Trio do "The Healer"? I've paid money to hear them before; let's hear the new stuff!)

I totally agree with this comments, which I thihk is the first time. About that ice cream line - it moves really fast. I got to the rear and was served and back in my seat in less time than it took Karen Peck to shriek her way through her set. Got back in time to hear "four Days Late" which, in my view, is the only thing she ever sung worth listening to. They do need more butter pecan, though.
