I have subscribed to XM for almost a year and a half -once I found out that Enlighten was coming. My reaction is that of disappointing but not surprising in the least. It's better than nothing but I'd hate for someone to whom I was trying to introduce SG music to have to listen to an hour of it and think that is what the best is.

There are a myriad of reasons for the lack of quality and all are correctable but are going to take time. However, I find that most of my XM time, which is about 2 hours a week most weeks or less, is spent on other channels like Major League Baseball or talk channels or sports channels. I listen to Enlighten until a song comes on that I don't like or is hokey (about every other or no better than 1 out of every 3) and I switch it.

Daniel Britt does a good job with the interviews and I'm hoping they can build on that though.

I do think it is symbolic of typical - we are behind the curve slightly as always. That is because our audience, typically skewed older, is slower on the uptake with new technology. That's just normal. When the demand is such that more music is available on mp3 downloads is profitable - more companies and artists will go that route I'm sure.

My 15 year old has her iPod stuck in her ears a lot, a whole lot. She listens while she eats, while she computer surfs, while she picks up her room, and almost 100% of the time she is in any vehicle. A lot of her music is CD's that she's ripped into it.

While I think it's wise to look ahead at what is coming and help to plan ahead, I don't see that there is a demand for SG to be on the cutting edge. Some groups still produce cassettes because they have people that don't have CD players!

I have to say I am a little less optimistic. I have XM in my car and listen to Enlighten 34 every day. The only reason I purchase digital music tracks for my MP3 player is to have the music available when I'm on a trip or at the beach. The reason I pay $12-$15 a month to listen to commercial-free radio is so I don't have to also purchase SG music as often.

If I had a portable device that I could use to listen to a great variety of SG music anywhere commercial-free, why would I buy a song that quickly gets old?

[...] Now some of you will probably say you suspected this all along, but at last we have confirmation, from the words of Mr. Averyfineline himself: a non-sg friend of mine who lurks on the blog as an alien outsider commented just the other day on how many intelligent and insightful commenters this site is fortunate to have… [...]
