I just got the Collingsworths new project "We Still Believe" last night. I have never seen more impressive packaging in Southern Gospel....WOW....incredible graphics and layout that sets a new bar for the industry!

Well, what Madacy refers to as a Digipack is a tri-fold cardboard with hard plastic inside that holds the 3 CDs on a spindle much like a "regular" CD case, this is wrapped flat in loose cellophane then folded into standard CD size. It takes up less room (spine-out) than a regular 3-pack, and weighs let than a boxed 3-pack. This is nowhere near the cool 2-folder with CD on one side and lyrics in the other pocket. There is no room for lyrics or much publishing information on the Madacy Digipacks, but it does allow you to see the fronts of all 3 CDs and whatever graphics ther are without opening the (cellophane) packaging.

I don't mind shrink wrap, but I despise the sticker that is found at the top of most CDs. Those things are pure evil.

I believe they're referred to as 'Digipaks' and they come in a variety of styles with multiple panels and pockets to include booklets and/or multiple discs. The cardboard is coated with a UV coating, either matte or high-gloss finish. They look really sharp and more and more major label releases are incorporating them rather than the standard jewel case.

Okay Thom but I still want to know how to scrape the peanut butter from the bottom of the jar without getting my hand sticky...I still miss the beauty of large album covers on records. It used to be art, now it's just graphic design gone wild....cardboard or plastic, most of my CD's end up in a case/carrier.

how to open a new CD with that darned seal around one edge:

with Cd in hand, take your car key or an ink pen and scrape it down along the side or end of the case to get the shrink wrap to peel off. Then carefully unhinge one corner of the jewel case so that the front and back panel of the jewel case seperate. the 2 pieces will be held together only by that BLASTED sticky tape end piece. now that the case is seperated it is easy to simply tear the jewel case loose from that ANNOYING sticky tape.

Now that you have the 2 separate pieces in hand, carefully re-align the corner hinges and tada (!) you are open and free of the $#%@& sticky tape! lol

Album covers is a good name for them. But then I could never get used to NOT calling the CDs in my collection albums, anyway. As one of those people who still have about 4 feet of vinyl LP records (yes, records) stored on a shelf beneath my turntable (yes, a turntable), the cardboard, paperboard, whatever seems to hold up well enough for average use. And clear packaging tape is great for mending the split seams. Funny how something can be so old it acutally becomes new again!

I believe the industry's name for the cardboard packaging is actually a "4-panel CD sleeve". Why not (just) call them album covers?

Call me an old fogey, or perhaps remind me I have OCD, but I prefer the plastic jewel cases. I've never had too much trouble with taking care of them so they don't break, or getting the inserts in carefully and correctly to avoid damaging them. I agree they do tend to get cracked in the mail or somewhere en route to me, and I also share everyone's disdain for the inventor of the hermetic seal. (Good thing you can easily buy replacement jewel cases for 25 cents at Big Lots!) But the cardboard or digipak cases are much more difficult to take care of. Without the plastic jewel case to preserve the pristine condition of the artwork, you quickly get nicks and scratches and smudges on the actual artwork itself. Anybody taken a look at the vinyl LP shelf at Goodwill lately to observe how well cardboard packaging holds up over time? Anybody up for some moderate ringwear and 4" split seams?

I know, iTunes will render CDs obsolete in a year and a half and it won't matter anymore.

The Collingsworth Family's last recording was done in the cardboard packaging.

My first impression of the Martina McBride CD is that Martina needs to put some clothes on.

Avery is right about the seal on the top of the jewel case. To quote Joel Lindsey, whoever came up with that idea needs to be slapped. Hard. Twice.
