Truth in charting

In an email that made the rounds late last week, the station manager at WSTS in Fairmont, NC, just says no to the SN chart:

In order to be God honoring and Christ exalting in the music we play, we are electing to remove ourself as a Singing news reporting station.  This has nothing to do […]

Hook of the day

Last week’s Prairie Home Companion featured songs written by listeners for Valentines Day. I was particularly smitten with a song whose hook was “as love would have it.” I don’t know how original it is, but it was new (and well turned) to me. How bout you? Heard any good hooks lately?

Post-modern sg

Via Adam Edwards, a clip of Hannah Montana Miley Cyrus singing “The Climb,” the cut that will - as we discussed a bit ago - be released to sg to radio soon.

Concert Review: Gaither Homecoming

Date: Thursday, February 12
Location: Fort Myers, FL
Setting: Germaine Arena
Average age guesstimate: Snow bird
Attendance: ca 6000
If you want to understand what is probably the main reason Bill Gaither made such revanchist splashy changes to the Gaither Vocal Band, sit through the first hour of the show on the Lovin’ Life tour. If you want to know […]

More on Sirius/XM bankruptcy

From reader RK:
The problem with Sirius XM these days has far less to do with the merger or any other perceived shortcomings than it does with pure supply/demand economics: 1. Their business model depends on new subscription growth; 2. Most new subscription growth comes from the sale of new cars equipped with satellite radio; and, […]

Thursday Roundup

As Chuck and DBM have already noted, the NYT ran a piece yesterday saying that Sirius (home to, among others, Howard Stern and the sg enLighten channel - yes, you’ve got to figure out for yourself which is the flagship station) is probably headed for bankruptcy. I’ve seen or heard nothing from Marlin Taylor or […]

Monday Roundup

[Note: For some reason this post disappeared from the site recently (second time this has happened in the past few weeks … anybody got any ideas what’s up?). I’ll try to repost comments that had accrued asap.]

Archie Watkins is leaving the Inspirations? So says this commenter. We’ve been down this road before and turned back, […]

White gospel

A reader comments:
What’s up with “white gospel?” I’ve never heard SG referred to that way. Maybe that’s the way those brainy academics can diminish it.
A good point, and one I probably should have addressed already, since I’m bandying the term about so much lately.
I can see how someone long familiar with sg might see the […]

Moderation

Regular readers will know that since avfl added comments threads to posts, moderation is minimal, and/but a few readers think it’s time to reconsider that approach. Says one:
I realize that you don’t want to get too heavy-handed with moderating comments (I can understand that this might partly be due to time constraints); but I wish […]

Open Thread

I’ll be away for the next few days so feel free to talk amongst yourselves. Some kindling:

The Gaither Reunion albums we’ve been discussing to death just went to the top of Billboard’s CCM and sg charts.
Will Ann Downing’s new memoir really be called “Skidmarks on the Road of Life”? While we wait for an answer, […]
