"I'm kind of homesick for a country"..I'm not going to a country, I'm going to a "city" with streets of gold.....

Singing with your index finger stuck in your right ear, along with the ability to cup your hand to your mouth to funnel your words into your ear.

This technique takes much coordination of facial muscles to screw the mouth up towards the ear.

Not all humans can perfect this while cocking the head and also looking sincerely at the audiance with a very spiritual demeanor.

This probably takes a doctorates degree in stage technique.

(KJV)Isaiah 62:4--Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married.

Looks to me like the origins of both come from the Prophet Isaiah.

#4 SDG (my Latin training won't let me to call you Gloria), you've made my day! Though I might not be able to enroll in the graduate program, I'm sure I could audit some of the classes. Might even find time to teach a couple of the courses. LOL

I think I may start a graduate program for people desiring to become "gospel music scholars." Here are some of the preliminary course offerings:

Bible Cliche Theology I & II
Intro to Fake Southern Accents
Southern Gospel Composition (aka, Intro to Plagiarism)
Southern Gospel History (aka, Current Events)
Sex Ed

Please feel free to suggest additional course offerings. I want future "gospel-music scholars" to have a well-rounded gospel music education.

One of the worst songs ever is Away in a Manger (though I love it…) “But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.” What kind of baby doesn’t cry? Usually ones with severe problems. Many of the ideas we have about Christianity do not come from the Bible. Things like Peter being crucified upside down and a vast wealth of information from Paradise Lost have all made it into what many believe to be a list of things found “somewhere” in the Bible.

A second reaction to this thread:
Avery, I agree with your thoughts about suffering and the meaning or meaninglessness of our experience in this life.

I love the tune, the rhymes and rhythms of "All That Matters to the Lord" (A Jake Hess standard later covered by Mark Lowry and also by a newer iteration of the Imperials). But the theology is awful. To say that He doesn't really care about the way you wear your hair (when every hair is numbered), or the car you drive that you can't afford (as a matter of Christian stewardship) of the house you own - heaven knows you won't live there long, is to misunderstand life as a servant of the Master. And it does not consider the fact that one day we will even have to give an account for every idle word. My understanding of scripture is that He values every tear we shed and that every deed matters. Our soul DOES matter to the Lord but so does our life on this earth. (I'm, with you on this one, Doug.)

I'm going to respond under two covers - because the comments apply to separate subjects. But first to Tom:
Thank you for an exceptionally thoughtful and insightful response to the question of the use of Beulah as a figure of speech. I'm sure you are exactly correct. I knew that most of our understanding of Satan and his "fall from heaven" comes from Paradise Lost and from Pilgrim's Progress rather than from Scripture but I hadn't made the connection with Beulah.

As to the use of the term Calvary, I know that the centrality of the sacrificial death of the Son of God is key to all human history. (DUH!) My question was the (over?)use of the term Calvary when 3 out of 4 of the authors of the gospels don't use the term, Paul never does, John the Revelator never does, Jesus never did, etc. Why/How did that word become so popular? I fully understand why SGM sing so much about the cross ("Gospel" is its middle name.) But the popularity of the term "Calvary"? Jim E. Davis may have been closer to THE answer.

Anyway, thanks for the enlightening and thought-provoking reply to my questions.
